The first place you see when you go to Maui, is Kahului which is Maui`s main city. It is here that you will find the airport, the major shopping districts and department stores, and most of the big-name corporate stores that the mainland US is so well known for. Stores like Target and Walmart, for example, are only found in one location in Kahului. While you are enjoying yourself in Kahului, there are many things that you can do to keep yourself fully entertained. You will beautiful botanic parks, pristine beaches, wildlife sanctuaries, farmer`s markets, and much, much more.
The best time to visit Kahului is all the time. Being a South Pacific island with near-perfect weather year-round, Maui is always inviting. June and July are the busiest times for tourism, so depending on your desire to either take part in the tourist scene or avoid it; you can plan your trip accordingly. The mid-winter months can get a little rainy, but in our experience, there is nothing wrong with a little warm, tropical rain, especially when it brings rainbows that encapsulate the entire island. No matter when you go, you will have the time of your life.
Maui is very easy to get around in. The island has two main parts, and there are highways surrounding both. Kahului sits right at the junction of both sections on the northern coast. One of the most awe-inspiring places that you can drive to while staying in Maui is Hana. Hana is a small town on the eastern side of the island; just on the other side of the famous Haleakala Volcano National Park, and getting there is an experience like none other.
You will pass by what seems like thousands of waterfalls, cliff faces, rainforest, and miles upon miles of beautiful beaches. In fact, there is so much to see and do along the way, you could take up to a few days getting there if you were really soaking up the island`s offerings. Many people go for the drive through Haleakala which ends up in Hana and then they come back along the coastal road. Doing that lets you see a much wider variety of Maui`s sites. Whichever plan you make for your tour around the island, one thing is for sure; you will not encounter a more relaxing driving experience anywhere else in the world.
Kahului has some great deals for car rentals that would make any island-goer very happy. You can find prices as low as $40 per day which is very good for the Hawaiian Islands.
The cheapest company to rent from is Europcar, but you will find a few other companies that offer great prices as well. Dollar and Thrifty are nice choices as they are only a little bit more expensive than Europcar.
When it comes to renting in the high season, there isn`t a very large price difference between mid-July and February when you book in advance. That changes, however, when you book at the last moment, or if you only rent a car for one day. The place that you rent from also plays a significant role in the pricing of Kahului rental cars.
If you book your car for one week from the airport, you can expect to pay around $30 per day for your rental car. That same car rented from the airport for only one day, would go for nearly $60 per day, any time of year. And if you rent from a location outside of the airport, the price almost doubles unless you have a coupon or some other form of discount.
If you can, always book your rental car for as many days as possible and be sure to pick up and drop off at the airport for the lowest possible rates.
