Crete isn’t the kind of place you want to rush through. From mountain villages frozen in time to postcard-perfect beaches tucked behind winding coast roads, this Greek island is best explored at your own pace. That’s where cheap car rentals come in. With Economybookings, you can easily compare deals from top rental providers across the island to find a vehicle that suits your plans and your budget.
Whether you're landing in Heraklion, Chania, or arriving by ferry, having your own car gives you the freedom to discover Crete’s hidden corners and take detours whenever the mood strikes. You’ll save more when you book early, pick up at major locations, and choose compact or economy models.
Here are typical posted limits you’ll find on Crete:
Always obey posted signs and adjust your speed to match road and traffic conditions.
Driving in Crete means you can carve your own adventures beyond the resort zones and the packed sightseeing tours.
Start in a regional hub such as Chania or Heraklion. Wander through the old town, enjoy a meal by the harbour, then get on the road. Head west toward Balos, Elafonissi, or Falassarna, or go inland to the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) or Mount Ida (Psiloritis) for panoramic views.
On the south coast, you’ll find quieter villages and dramatic landscapes where fewer tourists venture. With a car, you can pause when you spot a view, stop at a village taverna or detour down a road just because it looks inviting.
One of the great drives is the loop from Rethymno through olive groves and mountain vistas back to the north coast. Another leads you along the east coast, past ancient ruins, through coastal villages and toward remote beaches.
Whatever your pace, a rental car lets you build your own itinerary. One moment you’re at a beach, the next exploring a historic monastery or winding through mountain switchbacks.
Crete offers distinct moods through the seasons:
Greek is the official language on Crete, and you’ll find English widely used in tourist areas, signage, and rental paperwork. You’ll be fine navigating with English, especially in larger towns and travel‑friendly zones.
Greece uses the Euro (€). Car rental companies, gas stations, and most parking machines accept major credit and debit cards, including tap‑to‑pay. In more rural spots, you may need cash for small purchases or village‑based services, so keep some on hand.

We arrived 1.5 hours earlier than planned but we were well served. Delayed return time by an hour, no problem

Staff was very helpful and courteous. I thought having to pay for extra insurance to avoid a large (1300 euros) deposit was a rip off. Then I drove in Crete and got stuck in a 1500 year old alley and scratched the whole side of the car! Dropped it at the rental office, filled out a single form and paid a 15 euro fee and DONE. Excellent service.

53 quid for an SUV for 7 days in Crete - excellent. The cheapest parking at Birmingham Airport was far more than that!

Absolutely great little car for our family holiday. Clean, modern, tidy, easy to drive. (other than being a left hand drive)
